Difference Between Cement and Concrete?

Many people often use the terms cement and concrete interchangeably, but they are not the same. Cement is a key ingredient in concrete, but it is not the final product. What is Cement?

Cement is a fine, grey powder that acts as a binding agent in construction materials. When mixed with water, it forms a paste that hardens over time. The main types of cement used in India are:

  • Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC): Commonly used in general construction work.
  • Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC): Used in structures exposed to water, such as dams and bridges.
  • Portland Slag Cement (PSC): Used in coastal and marine construction due to its resistance to chemical attacks.

Key Differences Between Cement and Concrete

  1. Cement is a component of concrete, but concrete is the final building material.
  2. Cement alone is not strong—it needs to be combined with aggregates to form concrete.
  3. Concrete is used for construction, whereas cement is used to make mortar, plaster, and concrete.
  4. Cement is more expensive per unit weight compared to concrete, but concrete provides better strength and durability.

Examples to Understand the Difference

  • If you build a wall, you use cement to make the mortar that binds the bricks together.
  • If you construct a road, you use concrete, which contains cement along with sand and aggregates.
