What is Pile Foundation and its types ?

Introduction

Pile foundation is a type of deep foundation used in building construction to transfer the load of the building to deeper and more stable soil layers or rock. It consists of long cylindrical or prismatic members called piles that are driven or drilled into the ground. The piles support the building by transferring the load through the soil layers to a more stable layer beneath.

Types of pile foundation

There are several types of pile foundations available, each designed to meet specific requirements based on different parameters.

Based on Load Transfer Mechanism:

One of the most common ways of classifying pile foundations is based on the load transfer mechanism. There are two main types of pile foundations based on load transfer mechanism:

1️. End Bearing Piles:

End bearing piles, also known as point bearing piles, are used when the soil at the surface is too weak to support the weight of the structure. These piles transfer the load of the structure through weak soil layers to a stronger layer of rock or dense soil. End bearing piles are typically made of concrete or steel and are driven deep into the ground until they reach the stronger layer.

2️.Friction Piles:

Friction piles, also known as skin friction piles, rely on the frictional resistance generated between the surface of the pile and the soil to transfer the load of the structure to the surrounding soil. These piles are typically made of concrete or steel and are driven deep into the ground. Friction piles are commonly used in soft or loose soil where the bearing capacity of the soil is insufficient to support the weight of the structure.

Based on Construction Method:

Pile foundations can also be classified based on the method of construction. The three most common types of pile foundations based on construction method are:

1️.Cast-in-Place Piles:

Cast-in-place piles are created by drilling a hole into the ground and filling it with concrete or other materials. The pile is reinforced with steel bars or cages to provide additional strength. This type of pile foundation is commonly used in locations where access is limited or where the soil conditions are not suitable for precast piles.

2️. Precast Piles:

Precast piles are manufactured off-site and then transported to the construction site. They are typically made of concrete or steel and are used in locations where access is not an issue and the soil conditions are suitable for precast piles. Precast piles offer several advantages, including faster installation times and a more consistent quality of pile.

3️.Driven Piles:

Driven piles are installed by driving the pile into the ground using a pile driver. The pile can be made of concrete, steel, or timber and is driven until it reaches a specified depth or resistance. Driven piles are commonly used in soil conditions where the bearing capacity of the soil is low, and the soil is too soft for end-bearing piles.

Based on Material Used:

Pile foundations can also be classified based on the material used to construct the pile. The three most common types of pile foundations based on material used are:

1️. Concrete Piles:

Concrete piles are made of reinforced or prestressed concrete and are commonly used in construction projects where the soil conditions are suitable for end-bearing or friction piles. Concrete piles are highly durable and offer excellent resistance to corrosion, making them a popular choice in marine or coastal construction projects.

2️.Steel Piles:

Steel piles are made of steel and can be either hollow or solid. They are commonly used in construction projects where the soil conditions are suitable for friction piles. Steel piles offer several advantages, including high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent resistance to corrosion, and ease of transportation and handling.

3️.Timber Piles:

Timber piles are made of wood and are used in locations where the soil is acidic or corrosive to other materials. They are commonly used in construction projects where the load requirements are low, such as for residential buildings or temporary structures. Timber piles offer several advantages, including low cost, ease of installation, and environmental friendliness.

Based on Shape:

Pile foundations can also be classified based on their shape. The two most common types of pile foundations based on shape are:

1️.Cylindrical Piles:

Cylindrical piles are the most commonly used shape for pile foundations. They are typically made of concrete, steel, or timber and can be used for end-bearing or friction pile foundations.

2️.Tapered Piles:

Tapered piles are designed to provide additional strength and stability in soft or weak soils. They are typically wider at the base and narrower at the top, allowing them to provide more support in the areas where it is needed most.

Pile foundations are an essential component of many construction projects, providing support for structures in areas with poor soil conditions or where additional stability is needed. The type of pile foundation used will depend on a variety of factors, including the load transfer mechanism, the method of construction, the material used, and the shape of the pile. Each type of pile foundation has its own advantages and disadvantages, and careful consideration must be given to selecting the appropriate type of pile foundation for a given project.
